Thats why I like to play bass through my Ampeg B15 portaflex. I'm not that big of fan of the "vintage" cathode follower sound, except for in guitar/bass amps. If I'm going to do tubes in my stuff, at min it needs to be balanced SRPP topology. Nothing wrong with a dose of 2nd order harmonics if done evenly. It has alot of 2nd order fluff that sounds engaging. The Audionote sound is IMO mostly related to the "sloppy" tube buffer on the output. The PCM63 is still easier to implement than the 1541A, but harder to make it shine. Hence the AD1865 being a more complete package, as is the TDA1543. Its not easy to make the old Phillips chip work well. I'm pretty sure the 1541A is not something AN wants to use due to its difficult implementation compared to other DAC chips. It just sounds overall more natural and without the plastic sheen I hear from the other DACs, with exception of maybe the better AKMs with supporting peripherals. The midrange is a different story and is always going to favor the 1541A in any guise. No digital source has ever sounded this close to analogue. In dual differential setup it sounds just a bit more accurate on top and bottom with OS than the TDAs, considering the same digital filtering. Our new belt drive CD transport developed by Audio Note's own 'Q' Darko Greguras (James Bond reference, look it up) is finished, and the lucky beta-test customers are thoroughly amazed by the performance. I tend to favor the PCM63 as one of the more modern DAC chips. This is to also improve LF performance and move the phase shift from the HP point down lower, sort of the same thing a larger coupling cap would do. The distortion levels at the tiny AC voltage swing in a cathode bypass cap are going to be way lower than. What I noticed about this new hybrid DSD recording played on the Audio Note as a redbook CD was the firmness but lack of insistence of the lower registers. One of my favorite electrolytic aside from the nichicon muse UES (bipolar, so not a good choice in a polarized application. BOB NEILLS SYSTEM: LOUDSPEAKERS Reynaud Concordes on Symposium Sveltes. I'm increasing the size of this cap from 470/16 to 1000/35 and using a Panasonic ECQ type. For those looking for superb sound quality in a small but perfectly formed and affordable package, there is no superior choice. The cathode bypass is another place we can improve, but its not nearly as critical having only 1V DC drop across the electrolytic cap, which sn't going to impart much distortion if the cap is of decent quality and large enough in value. The CDT-Zero/II represents the most cost effective Red Book CD Transport for the discerning music lover. If set at 5 mA, I believe it could bring out the best in this stage. Thats why I'd like to try better resistors and even a CCS. Getting back to the AN dac, the output buffer series anode resistors probably impart the largest sonic influence in that stage than any other component.
